"The Fassbinder Story" narrates the fast and furious life of the German writer-producer-director and, above all, artist Rainer Werner Fassbinder, a life which had all the dynamics of a Hollywood blockbuster. A man who paid the price for a career shaped by ceaseless work and world fame. After his death in 1982, aged only 37, Fassbinder came to leave a total of 44 self-directed films, including two multi-part TV series. The chronological connection between his films, whenever showing autobiographical references to his life, sketches the madness of his being, uniting it with rare footage from film sets and previously undisclosed video and audio recordings into one composite whole.

Though he never actually worked in Hollywood, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, who died in 1982 at the age of 36, was influenced greatly by Amercian studio films of the 1950s and the convention of melodrama (the link most often mentioned is Douglas Sirk). With actor-turned-filmmaker Ulli Lommel as host and guide (he appeared in Fassbinder's very first feature, Love Is Colder Than Death, in 1969), documentary filmmaker Robert Fischer conducts a tour of Hollywood today, pausing to chat with cinematographer Michael Ballhaus and actress Hanna Schygulla # both charter members of Fassbinder's tight-knit stock company of technicians and players # as well as Wim Wenders, who found the toehold in the studio system that Fassbinder never had. The proceedings are liberally sprinkled with clips from Fassbinder's films, as well as glimpses of a theater company in Los Angeles that specializes in performing the director's plays. As Fischer makes clear, Fassbinder's influence on Hollywood is not only still being felt today, but is gathering a dramatic force that will serve to introduce his oeuvre to a new generation of moviegoers.

Rainer Werner Fassbinder was probably Germany’s most significant post-war director. His swift and dramatic demise at the early age of 37 in 1982 left behind a vacuum in European filmmaking that has yet to be filled, as well as a body of unique, multi-layered and multifarious work of astonishing consistency and rigour. From 1969 onwards, Danish director and film historian Christian Braad Thomsen maintained a close yet respectfully distanced friendship with Fassbinder. Fassbinder – Lieben ohne zu fordern is based on his personal memories as well as a series of conversations and interviews he held with Fassbinder and his mother Lilo in the 1970s. The film also contains current interviews with Irm Hermann and Harry Baer, both of whom were close to Fassbinder. Beginning with Fassbinder’s extraordinary childhood in traumatised post-war Germany, the film, which is divided into seven chapters, provides an illuminating, intimate and moving tribute that bears witness to the enduring relevance of both the man and his work. A colorful and provocative survey of anarchism in America, the film attempts to dispel popular misconceptions and trace the historical development of the movement. The film explores the movement both as a native American philosophy stemming from 19th century American traditions of individualism, and as a foreign ideology brought to America by immigrants. The film features rare archival footage and interviews with significant personalities in anarchist history including Murray Boochkin and Karl Hess, and also live performance footage of the Dead Kennedys.

Fernando Pessoa's paradoxical 1922 short story is styled as a Platonic dialogue between a wealthy banker and his colleague, in which the banker explains the strictly logical path that led him step-by-step from an anarchist youth to being the only true and consistent anarchist. The tale playfully undermines many of the founding texts of political 'enlightenment' (Descartes, Hobbes, Locke, Malthus, Rousseau, Smith, Spinoza), as well as making a devastating critique of revolutionary psychology and of 1917 Bolshevism. Like magic, the sleight of hand is transparent, apparently convincing us of the banker's inexorable logic, while the plot challenges us to discover the flaw in the shocking twist of the wealthy banker's logic.
